We are Rick and Karen Riddell operating West Haven Farms and West Haven Nursery.  Our philosophy is to work with nature and the environment and not against it. After all our home is also home to moose, deer, coyote, fox, weasel, woodpeckers, owls, hawks, frogs, salamanders, insects, fungi, many native plants and other flora and fauna.  In our woodlands we leave snags for cavity nesters such as pileated woodpeckers, and course woody debris for salamanders, insects, and fungi.

We continue to implement permaculture techniques and low input sustainable farming.  Besides grass fed beef we also enjoy our own organic garden produce, free range chicken and eggs, and naturally grown trout, year round.  In winter, we warm our bones with firewood from our sustainable woodlands!

Galloway’s are an old breed originating in the late 1700's in Scotland.  They have thick coats to with stand our minus 40 Celsius winters, will graze through 30 cm of snow, and use snow for winter water. They are efficient on rough pasture, and consume more varieties of plants than most other breeds. Galloway’s are gentle in temperament, good mothers with few birthing problems, and they forcibly protect their young against predators, such as coyotes. Our Galloway cattle are rotated through a series of paddocks throughout the year to maximize forage, distribute nutrients, manage pests naturally, and allow our woodlands and pastures to thrive.  Solar electric fencing keeps our cattle out of our spring fed trout pond and allows us to control grazing in our wetland areas. We use no chemicals in our woodlands and pastures.
